Effect of Ether and Halothane Anesthesia on the Pulmonary Surfactant in Rabbits

Abstract
In an attempt to observe possible effects of ether and halothane on the surfactant of the rabbit lung extracts, the surface tensions of lung extracts were measured from the lung extracts of rabbits after they were subjected to the moderate anesthesia with ether and halothane for one hour by non-rebreathing system.
The comparison was made with the surface tensions measured from the normal rabbit lung extracts, and the following results are obtained.
1. The maximal surface tension, minimal surface tension, the width of the tension area diagram at the surface area of 40%, and stability index of the normal rabbit lung extracts were 40.73 dynes/cm, 8.96 dynes/cm, 20.71 dynes/cm and 1.28 respectively.
2. The activity of surfactant was prominently depressed by the ether anesthesia.
3. The activity of surfactant was also significantly depressed by the halothane anesthesia.
4. No significant difference was observed on the activities of surfactants between the ether and halothane anesthesia, and it is postulated that the production of excessive secretion in alveoli which was more abun¡þdant in the case of ether anesthesia than in the halothane anesthesia, and/or the inhibitory action of respiration by both ether and halothane anesthesia cannot be solely responsible for the depression of the activity of surfactant by the ether and halothane anesthesia
